The federal funds rate is the interest rate at which depository institutions trade federal funds (balances held at Federal Reserve Banks) with each other overnight. When a depository institution has surplus balances in its reserve account, it lends to other banks in need of larger balances.

Since that time, the central bank has instead expressed a target range for the overnight intrabank lending rate.

In 2019, the Federal Reserve’s Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) plans to hold its meetings on January 29-30, March 19-20, April 30-May 1, June 18-19, July 30-31, September 17-18, October 29-30, and December 10-11.
Historical Interest Rates Mortgage Mortgage rates have slowly started to rise, but it’s still a buyers market. As of March 2018, Freddie Mac pins the national average for a 30-year fixed rate mortgage at 4.44%. That’s not quite as good as the historic low of 3.31% from 2012, but it’s still fairly low in historic terms.
The charts below show the targeted fed funds rate changes since 1971. Until October 1979, the Federal Open Market Committee didn’t announce its target interest rate after meetings. The target rate was inferred by an archived chart published by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
Cheapest Fixed Rate Mortgages When we shopped around, we found lower rates at various banks. HSBC Bank, for instance, is offering a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage, with an APR of 4.03 percent. Wells Fargo offers an APR of 3.98.
